It’s Our 53rd Birthday!
This year, Van Ness Recovery House proudly celebrates 53 years of serving the LGBTQIA+ recovery community. For more than five decades, this space has been rooted in support, healing, and the belief that recovery is possible for everyone who comes through our doors. We are deeply grateful for the people and community that have grown alongside us over the years.
As part of this milestone year, we are continuing the renovations and improvements that have been taking place across our house over the past couple years. In celebration of our 53rd birthday, we officially broke ground this month on renovations to our meeting room—an especially meaningful space where recovery, healing, and fellowship take place every day. The meeting room serves not only our current residents, but also alumni and members of the broader community seeking support through meetings and shared connection. These updates reflect our ongoing commitment to creating welcoming spaces where individuals can find support, build relationships, and continue their recovery journey for years to come.
If you would like to support these ongoing improvements and the work we do each day, donations can be made by clocking the orange button.

Mental Health Awareness Month
May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to recognize the importance of emotional well-being and the role community plays in healing and recovery. Mental health and substance use recovery are deeply connected, and we are reminded every day of how important compassion, connection, and support are in helping individuals move forward.
This month serves as an opportunity to continue breaking stigma, encouraging conversation, and reminding people that no one has to navigate their struggles alone. Whether through recovery, community support, or simply creating spaces where people feel seen and supported, every step toward mental wellness matters.
Current Needs
As we continue our work, we remain incredibly grateful for the ongoing support of our community. Donations of everyday items help us create a welcoming, comfortable, and creative environment for the individuals we serve. Gently used items in good condition are always appreciated and often make a meaningful impact.
At this time, we are especially in need of bath towels and magazines for art therapy activities. These contributions support both daily living and creative expression within our program. If you have items you are no longer using, we would be grateful for your support.
