A health disparity is “a particular type of health difference that is closely linked with social, economic, and/or environmental disadvantage. Health disparities negatively affect groups of people who have systematically experienced greater obstacles to health based on factors like their racial or ethnic group; socioeconomic status; mental health diagnosis or disability; sexual orientation and gender identity. LGBT individuals encompass all races and ethnicities, religions, and social classes. Sexual orientation and gender identity questions are not asked on most national or State surveys, making it difficult to estimate the number of LGBT individuals and their health needs. Van Ness Recovery House helps improve the health, safety, and well-being of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals through compassionate care.
