From the earliest days of the HIV/AIDS crisis, Van Ness Recovery House opened its doors when others closed theirs, becoming the first—and for a time, the only—recovery home in Los Angeles to welcome people living with HIV/AIDS. We lost half our Board of Directors and too many residents and friends, yet we never turned away. Our story is the story of HIV/AIDS in Los Angeles: devastating loss, fierce resilience, and the unwavering belief that everyone deserves a safe place to recover from addiction and rebuild their lives.
